George Washington Bates, only child of Francis and Laura (Miller) Bates, was born in Dover Twp., Ohio. He married Hazel Lucinda Simmons of Dover, Ohio, daughter of Lester and Abigail Simmons. Five of their children were born in Ohio. Then in 1869, he and his family moved with his father and mother to Michigan. Lucinda had two older and one younger sisters and a younger brother. Her sister Henriette and husband, Charles Bullis, of Ohio, traveled with the group from Ohio to Michigan and they all lived in the same area. Nine more children were born to George and Lucinda after their move to Michigan.
George was raised and educated to be a minister, even though he knew the bible better than most clergy, he preferred farming and so that is what he did. He always read his bible in the evening with one of his children holding the lamp beside hi. He also took in boys who were without homes and raised them as his own.
He learned herbal medicine from the Indians, probably in Ohio. There was nothing he didn't know about Herbs. He was often called on to help someone in the area and saved his granddaughters life when the Dr. said there was no hope for her. (using the herb, Brake Root).
He was also known to predict events. He predicted the wars, including the religious ones. Also that men would fly, he didn't use the work airplane as it was not known at that time. Shortly before his death, he predicted the sinking of a great ship and the lose of many lives, one year after his death the Titanic sank.

!The following story was received from Adrienne Adams on 27 Apr 2000:
My family folklore says that Sarah Jane Bates had been engaged to a young man, but he was mortally wounded in the Civil War. He was sent home on a train, and supposedly died in Sarah's arms at the station. (I know, I know...family folklore.) Sarah vowed she would never marry, unless it would be to a soldier. Then, some time later, at a winter sledding party, her horse-drawn sleigh overturned and she was thrown right into the lap of a young man. Her first words to him were, "Were you a soldier?" and he said yes. That was William Holt.

1880 census has first name spell "Serah". Shows father's birthplace as OH, mother's as PA.

Notes of Edgar A. Bates - 1978:
My original information on Albert was that he married an Alace B. PRATT in 1864 and his 4th child was listed as Alace H. There is no mention of either Alace in any subsequent info received. 1st Ref. states he married Amanda Altenburgh on returning home from the war - 1865-66. No mention of any divorce or her death. Next info was his marriage to Mary Sophronia GORDON soon after moving to Mt. Vernon, ILL. 23 May 1886. Am trying to get at the TRUTH.

From handwritten notes by a grandchild of Thomas J. Bates through Sylvester:
Albert's family was of Mason. The children of Albert & Mandy were Herbert, Clifford, Mary (married a Ferant?) and Lillie (married Swain).
Then Albert went down to souther ILL and married again - a northern woman; and then she died. "I don't know anything about his last family at Mt. Vernon, ILL."

From his military papers he is described as having dark blue eyes & dark hair.

Notes from Janice Miller:
